With former Lille owner Gérard López’s takeover of Bordeaux confirmed today, discussion continues over who will coach the team this season.
L’Équipe reported yesterday a four man shortlist had been compiled with the intention of replacing current coach Jean-Louis Gasset (67) which included former OGC Nice and Dortmund coach Lucien Favre and Joao Sacramento, recent assistant to Jose Mourinho at Tottenham.
20 Minutes, however, Switzerland coach Vladimir Petković remains López’s main target to replace the experienced former Saint-Étienne and Montpellier coach Gasset after a disastrous campaign in which the club were were nearly relegated before being provisionally demoted to Ligue 2 for financial reasons after investors King Street suddenly withdrew their support in April. Although, López was able to convince French football’s strict financial watchdog, the DNCG, that any deficit could be overcome, allowing FCGB to keep their place in Ligue 1.
Despite such severe financial concerns, Gasset’s pay off was expected to be in the region of €1.1m, reported
20 Minutes. However, as López explained at his opening press conference as FCGB President today, Gasset could yet be retained by Les Girondins. “Gasset is still on the list to remain in charge, we’ll know on Sunday or Monday,” Lopez said. “He’s someone I really appreciate, a decision hasn’t been taken.”
The Luxembourg businessman went on to say that, in an attempt to keep an often vociferous fanbase onside, he would look to undo unpopular decisions made by the previous owners, such as changing the new club crest and reverting to the club’s former full name: ‘Girondins de Bordeaux’ instead of the current ‘Bordeaux Girondins’.
López stated he wanted to add a “mindset and culture of winning. We also need stability. We will try to aim for the top half of the Ligue 1 table and to play in Europe within three years.”
